Production Season 4 was the fourth and last season of the first run of Futurama. It consisted of 18 episodes, and ended with what became a 'series finale'. It was not until 23 March, 2008, that a new episode of Futurama would air on television again.

Production season 4 was broadcast as both season 4 and 5. Fortunately, the last episode, "The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings" aired as the last episode of the first run of Futurama.

Plot development

This season continues on the relationship between Amy Wong and Kif Kroker, but also continues story arcs for Turanga Leela and Philip J. Fry, revealing that Leela is not an alien, but a mutant, and exploring Fry's destiny.

Production

The people at FOX Network told the writers and producers that this season might be the last thing they were ever going to do. But there was a 50-50 chance that the show might get picked up again. The writers, specifically Ken Keeler, wrote the season finale, which turned out later to be the series finale, as a closure episode, but without wrapping everything up.

Reception

This is considered by many fans to be the best season of Futurama. "Jurassic Bark", The Sting, and "The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings" are often considered to be the most moving episodes. "Teenage Mutant Leela's Hurdles", The Why of Fry, and "The Farnsworth Parabox" are also favorites among fans.
