Adding collaborative videos to your Wiki Hello,

My name is Avigail Perl and I work with all our Wiki partners here at Kaltura.

As you may have heard, through a partnership with the Wikimedia Foundation, Kaltura has developed a collaborative video extension to the MediaWiki software. (http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Collaborative_Video)

What this means is that ANY site using MediaWiki software can add the Kaltura collaborative video extension to its wiki easily and quickly today, by adding the software extension that is available for download.

Looking at your Wiki I thought you might be interested in adding our new collaborative video extension. With this capability, any of your users can add images, videos and sounds to the collaborative videos created, or edit them using the full-featured online video editor (with full history and versioning similar to the text-wiki).

In order to add this collaborative video extension to you site, all you need to do is:

1. Apply for a Partner ID here: http://www.kaltura.com/index.php/cms/signup

2. Download the Kaltura MediaWiki extension here: sourceforge.net/projects/kaltura/

3. Add the extension to your site

Featured Article

I was wondering what if the featured article was every two weeks instead of each month. By the time we run out of long articles the new series will have started - Humerbot 0.4 11:09, 5 February 2007 (PST)

When the featured articles were reactivated, I considered either monthly or fortnightly. Monthy won out because there isn't any system variable that counts fortnights, week and month are closest. Not sure if you have looked at the main page's source, but this is what the featured code looks like: {{Infosphere:Featured article for {{CURRENTMONTHNAME}}, {{CURRENTYEAR}}}}. I just found this which would allow for fortnights ( {{ #expr: {{CURRENTWEEK}} / 2 round 0 }} ), however we have neither the extension nor the right version of MediaWiki. - Quolnok 17:51, 5 February 2007 (PST)

The actual upgrade is easy, I've done it twice. But I always have to revert to the old version, because you have to run some scripts from the server, and the help files are un-helpfully vague on how exactly you do such a thing. One other option is to install the new version in a new directory, copy all pages over, then delete the old directory and move the new one. Downside is that all history and user accounts are lost... Pasting images on Microsoft Paint, Black Plain Images.

It means you are unable to get screenshots of DVD's. It's part of the movie industry (in partnership with the RIAA) telling you what you can and can't do with the things you own. If you have a secondary movie player (other than Media Player) try opening them both at once. It sometimes tricks one into allowing screenshots. --Buddy 17:42, 11 February 2007 (PST)

Number 1.0 image?

Also, why would you put a link directly to the image instead of the image page? Anyway, yeah. 720x540 is standard. Turn off Media Player's (or any other player's) "fit to player" option (or equivalent) so you can get the regular size. How are you able to categorize pages? I want to put the Comics Crew under the Comics category but I can't find how :P I'm probably just not looking hard enough. -- Ivan

Well... I might as well add this. Since I assume you have ftp (and ssh access) to the server of this wiki, I can easily tell you what you need to do to make it without the "index.php" part in the URL! (aka pretty URLs). First, create a file in the root directory of the domain, same directory where the index.php file is, called .htaccess, the period at the beginning is important. Then write this into it:

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.+)$ /index.php?title=$1 [L,QSA]

Now, we must make the Wiki too understand this, so save the file, and open LocalSettings.php, which is in the same directory. Add this line at the end:

$wgArticlePath      = "$wgScriptPath/$1";

Seriously though, I suggest read 73 in Conference Table. Add the move protection. Next step would be the CSS and styling the site, but that would also require you to add permissions for users to use their own CSS style, so I can mess around and make it better. At the sysop (and beurucrat) userlevels, and possbily the bot userlevel, we have this slightly different line on the recent changes

the revert is done through (diff), over to the right is a [rollback] link if the change was the last done to the page, that may be available to other registered users too. wherever the user made the last edit to the page the label "top" is there and "rollback" is accessable. There is no confirmation page, clicking the link instantly triggers a rollback. I uploaded all the flags for Template:Airings, but for some reason the US, Australian and New Zealand flag got ****ed up in the progress. However, when I click the link (to the real svg) it is perfectly fine. Remember, MediaWiki uses convert to convert them into PNG for viewing usual pages. Such as the small articles. Why they are ****ed up could either be because of version of the MediaWiki or the convert command or both. But I have tested the convert function on my own dreamhost server, and it works perfectly fine. So I'd go for the MediaWiki being a little too old. It shouldn't be hard to upgrade. When are you getting it?! We (by which I mean I, and possible also later the rest of the crew) need those extensions for this wiki! We need to compete with Wikipedia on new content! This wiki has not been around with this much new information exploding about Futurama at once! We need the right extensions to make our edits neat and fast, without stupid "surgery" to make it work. When do you get your Internet, so you can these fine extensions I have been speaking of, so I can start editing like mad man? I may seem pushy, but I have been patient so far! ParserFunction Extension

The MediaWiki's Meta wiki has a good installation guide right here; http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/ParserFunctions#Installation, just follow the guide until where it says Troubleshooting. When successful, it should appear in Special:Version. So, good luck. If you need any help, just say so. I got all the one's that were .php and one that was .txt -- I tried to download the rest, but I don't think they were meant to be downloaded. Well, I think I figured it out... sort of. The reason it didn't work is because the files aren't files at all. They all link to revision histories. So I just uploaded a bunch of nonsense. *pokes around a bit* Wow, whoever designed that site was a retarded chimp at best. How do you actually get at the files themselves? I can get at the text of the files, but the best I can manage from that is manually copying that into a text editor and saving with the proper filename. WTF? Are there links directly to the files? Not even "Download" seems to be anything useful, least of all for downloading. Oh, wait... this time "download" did something. By jove, I think I've got it. Who's Jove, anyway?

Working together

Hi Buddy13. At the Futurama Wikia, we now have 511 articles, and you have 565 here. It's great to see so many people working on this content, but I'm wondering if it would be better to combine forces and merge these two projects. After all, 1076 articles would be better! I think I speak for most of us, when I say that we wouldn't exactly like the project to continue on Wikia. But rather have it continuing here (as an off Wikia wiki), personally, I consider Wikia as the geocities of Wikis. It is filled with ads, etc. And it does not keep in style with well known wikis such as Wikipedia. So if you were to move all the content over here, and "close" down the wiki on Wikia and rather link to here, then sure. But I have a hint that this may not occur. Hi Svip. I'm sorry you think Wikia is full of ads. If you log in, there are no ads, and even for non-logged in users, there's just one ad in the top right corner when using the default skin. The wikipedia (monobook) skin is available as an option. See this example if you prefer that style. If that changes your mind, the offer of a merger with Wikia is always open. I agree with Svip. I don't see such a thing happening unless we suffer a massive cash flow problem. Right now I'd say the benefit of a merge would be minimal to us. As the others before me have said, we're not likely to migrate to a wikia page. I appreciate your offer, though, and we always welcome people here. The benefits of migrating here are that the site is wholly owned by me, and totally paid out of my pocket (unless people donate ;), so there are literally zero ads (and there never will be). And this also gives us the freedom to do nearly anything we want with the wiki, including extensions and the like (I don't know if wikia allows extensions, so I may be off on that point). Merging articles from such disparate styles would indeed be tedious, but I'm sure we could work it out if combining forces was agreed upon. I've not personally been to the wikia wiki in a long while, so I don't even know how things look over there. But, as Quolnok said, since most of our articles are on the same thing, it wouldn't give either of us a thousand articles, but rather some lower number. My only concern is stolen text/images. If we do not merge, I hope that we can continue to respect each others' members by not copy/pasting text or images from the other's wiki.
