Trivia

  • The name is a reference to the Empire's Death Star from Star Wars Episode IV - "A New Hope".
  • An unspiky version of the Near Death Star was seen in When Aliens Attack, after Fry spills beer on the transmitter and "zooms" into space; right after the asteroid belt and before Jupiter, a white ball-like structure can be seen with streaks like the Near Death Star.
  • The "endless rows" are similar to the Mines of Moria in the Lord of the Rings, although the first of the LOTR films were released after this episode. Though they could be inspired by the original works of Tolkien or other animated adaptations, they are more likely an intentional evocation of The Matrix in that these endless rows are filled with towers, the towers filled with the elderly. The parallel is confirmed when Professor Farnsworth is discovered in a capsule similar to Neo's in The Matrix.
  • The structures where the old people are placed within are all shaped like tombstones.
