Marianne is Zoidberg's girlfriend. They met at her flower stand, in 3013, [7ACV25] when Zoidberg bought half a bouquet of daisies for his then-girlfriend Zindy, who later left him because of his foul stench. As a florist, Marianne would get very little business, likely due to keeping the stand next to Zoidberg's dumpster. A full bouquet of daisies cost six dollars.

Marianne has an English accent. She was born with no sense of smell, so she was not affected by Zoidberg's odour. As a doctor, Zoidberg was able to give her her sense of smell, but he feared that this would end their relationship. However, he nevertheless performed a nose transplant, and Marianne ended up liking his scent, as she had never learned a good smell from a bad smell.

After the surgery, Marianne got a new job collecting waste.

Production

Marianne was first seen in a preview clip for broadcast season 10, in February 2013. She was also featured in a piece of concept art [1] and in a promotional picture of her and Zoidberg being mugged by Roberto, [2] both released by Countdown to Futurama, in June, as well as in a preview clip for 7ACV25, [3] released a week before the episode aired.

Trivia

  • Marianne may be a reference to the character Eliza Doolittle, from the 1912 play Pygmalion and the 1964 film My Fair Lady, who has a Cockney accent and sells flowers. She may also be a reference to the 1931 film City Lights, where a blind flower girl falls in love with Charlie Chaplin's character, not knowing that he is a tramp. The Little Tramp helps her get an operation to regain her sight, even though he fears that her seeing him will end their relationship.
