The Grand Midwife (also known of the Grand Priestess, the Grand Lunch Lady and the Grand Funeral Director) is an amphibiosan who explains the ceremony of delivering babies at the Amphibiosan Sacred Birthing Grounds. She then helps the pregnant person give birth. She has learnt the ceremony off by heart and refuses to change it.
