Wiki creation[edit]

How can you create a Wiki overt-ops? --Bender Bending Rodríguez 12:10, 21 October 2006 (PDT)

You should've left this on my talk page, but I shall answer: I signed up with DreamHost, and they have this very convenient feature called One-Click Installs. It can install any number of PHP-based services on your website, including a blog, a photogallery, a store, forums and polls, and even a Wiki. I just told it to install the Wiki (I'm also using the blog and photogallery on other parts of the site) and filled out information such as what it was about and stuff... And there's the Wiki. Hooray! And I could just as easily create another on another topic somewhere else on the site. And the MediaWiki software is free, and it's the same software that runs WikiPedia, so you know it's good. Hope that helps. Buddy 13:03, 21 October 2006 (PDT)

I did sign up, but it will not let me create a wiki. Why is that? --Bender 15:28, 21 October 2006 (PDT)

You have a site? It should be on the left column, after you log in, under Goodies. What's the address? Buddy 17:31, 21 October 2006 (PDT)

I does not have an address... oh, wait a minute, ********* --Bender 14:34, 24 October 2006 (PDT)

It says "You currently have no active domains with us. You'll need to add one before installing any software!" -- And you can't do that until you sign up for a hosting plan. Click "Billing" then "Manage Account" -- In the first or second box, there are links that say "Add a Plan" -- click that. I personally have the lowest possible plan, and I haven't had any problems yet with bandwidth or storage. It also comes with free domain registration (or it did when I signed up) so you'll be able to get a www.example.com address. After you've got a plan set up, and after a day or two (it takes that long for things to go through the internet), you'll be able to set up your Wiki. Buddy 08:47, 25 October 2006 (PDT)

Re: Image:Futuram Comic 21.jpg[edit]

Yeah, it probably should have the extra 'a' but I realised after uploading and didn't think it necessary to re-upload. There won't be confusion as to what it means and the image is primarily accessed throught the comic article. - Quolnok 19:00, 21 October 2006 (PDT)

Sysop[edit]

How do I get a sysop. ~BENDER 13:53, 31 October 2006 (PST)

[edit]

I had a feeling it may have been you... I didn't intend to offend, if I did, however in claiming that The Infosphere's logo and Futurama Wiki's logo are your site's old logos you claim that your site is the same site as this one (and the other wiki). It is technically identity theft, whether intended or not. It's the same principle as not sticking a Microsoft logo on something Microsoft has nothing to do with in order to sell more of it. Granted I don't know if shuch a thing would effect their sales... and in the case of wikis cash is pretty much irrelevent. But in that real-world example you can bet that provided the second company is unable to prove it used the logo first, Microsoft would sue them and win.
Of course the above is just an example of why you shouldn't have done it, we won't likely be doing such a thing, nor is it necessarily possible, I'm pretty sure it's limited to an ethics thing in our case. - Quolnok 16:53, 31 October 2006 (PST)

Error[edit]

How come this site has an error? The only things you can edit are talk pages and sections. I tried to create a page, and a thing popped up saying "do you want to save this file?". Can you please fix that.

Templates[edit]

Just wanted to let you know that using any new templates is discussed over at the Conference Table before we implement it, usually these are major changes. Also if a template is based on one from another wiki it is best to change it so that it is not identical, especially if images are involved. - Quolnok 18:47, 17 November 2006 (PST)

Copy - Paste[edit]

Copy-pasting whole pages from one wiki/website to another should be avoided (such as the Harold Zoid article from wikia), it has the end result of making all pages the same, and in turn, all sites become the same and we end up with a huge number of pointless sites clogging the internet's "pipes". I've noticed that quite a few of your edits are like this and that futurama.wiki.com now has many articles remarkably similar to the ones on this and other futurama wikis around the 'net. - Quolnok 19:11, 19 November 2006 (PST)

Paste Copy[edit]

There's nothing wrong with that site http://futurama.wiki.com being like other sites, because it is a personal site, that other people can sign up. Would you like to sign up? We are in desperate need of another user. Just follow the instructions on the Home Page! --~BENDER 19:29, 19 November 2006 (PST)

Admittedly to an extent it is allowable, however, copying others work (and I haven't looked into if you were the only one who wrote wikia's article) without giving any credit shouldn't be done. The only other example I know of here is the timeline article, which notes that it is duplicated from Wikipedia. - Quolnok 20:01, 19 November 2006 (PST)

Is is wrong?[edit]

Is there really anything wrong copying? Because, on the Futurama Wiki, they've copied a lot of things from Wikipedia, such as a lot of episodes. --~BENDER 08:42, 20 November 2006 (PST)

Silly question. YOu never got in trouble for copying others' work in school? As you can see here, text on this site is protected under a Creative Commons License—one that specifically requires attribution (i.e., credit). Copying the text violates copyright law. The Creative Commons license is more lax (and friendly) than standard copyright law, but you must still abide by it. Unlike the graphics, we do indeed have a legal backing on this. Stealing = bad. —Buddy 09:18, 20 November 2006 (PST)

Sysop... AGAIN[edit]

Buddy13, can you make me a sysop? I do good being a sysop on the other Wiki. User:Bender Bending Rodríguez/sig

My guess is that we don't need more sysops right now, or you have yet to meet quality standards and make X number of quality original and non copied articles. Obviously I'm not Buddy, so I don't know his reasons, those would be mine. When I became a Sysop I had never requested it, which may also be a factor. - Quolnok 18:16, 24 November 2006 (PST)

When will I be able to become a sysop? I was just wondering because I am a sysop on the Wikia Futurama and am good at it. I know how to be a sysop. Also, how can you become a sysop without requesting it? --Bender Bending Rodríguez 18:17, 24 November 2006 (PST)

Infosphere, unlike wikia, is run off a personal domain (wikia is a company). At the time I was the most (or only) active contributor. It's a "When he feels like it" type of thing, I think he also wanted at least one active sysop. - Quolnok 18:28, 24 November 2006 (PST)

reguarding featured articles[edit]

The featured articles for January - April had not been placed on the nominations section. Standard procedure is to nominate them, then whichever has the highest positive number of votes, or is closer to the top of the list, is then created as a featured article (I've lately created them on around the 20th of the month before). In the case of Bender, he was featured previously and would be unlikely to be featured again in the short term. - Quolnok 17:40, 24 November 2006 (PST)

Since you created a couple more, just thought I should note again that these should be created after voting has taken place or when there is only tenish days until the article is to appear on the main page. - Quolnok 18:32, 25 November 2006 (PST)
Further clarification: Nominated articles go in the "Nominations" section, articles that should be nominated after some improvements are made go in "Potential Candidates". If the featured articles that you created are Potential Candidates then the creation of featured articles for them was ridiculously early. - Quolnok 19:37, 25 November 2006 (PST)
I decided not to delete them or anything like that, however they are to be voted on before the months in question so they were moved to the correct section. I assumed you would have voted to feature them, otherwise it makes no sense to feature them. Some may get replaced before their month. Don't make the one for July, it is suposed to be blank at the moment (until around June-ish, at which point voting will have taken place) - Quolnok 19:50, 30 November 2006 (PST)

I know[edit]

Oh, I know exactly what to do about the Bender article.. will be changed to something else. --Bender Bending Rodríguez 17:41, 24 November 2006 (PST)

They have been nominated. --Bender Bending Rodrígueztalk

DVDs[edit]

I do not have all of the DVDs because the others (besides the first season) cost too much, and I am not paying for that stuff $30, $40, to $50 dollars, it's a ripoff. --Bender Bending Rodríguez 10:59, 25 November 2006 (PST)

Alien Signatures[edit]

Where do you get those Alien Sig images like Jensor and Gopher have? --Bender Bending Rodríguez 12:40, 25 November 2006 (PST)

One-Click Installs... Again.[edit]

How do you add a plan on dreamhost? --Bender Bending Rodríguez 13:15, 25 November 2006 (PST)

pna?[edit]

I have a feeling that both Template:Update and Template:Pna are the same as Template:Expansion. Less importantly, is pna an acronym? ---Unsigned comment by Quolnok at 12:50, 3 December 2006---

If you think they're redundant, then why did you create them? --Buddy 19:59, 3 December 2006 (PST)
Sorry Buddy, the comment above was me not Rod. Forgot to sign again. - Quolnok 20:34, 3 December 2006 (PST)

userboxes[edit]

Nice to see them in use. The reason for my not creating sub templates for each box is because wikis end up with huge amounts of clutter in the template namespace (evident at wikipedia) I used the same method as hrwiki.org, Infosphere:Userboxes a listing of the boxes. Also the wikipedia template you created has a link to wikipedia instead of to a wikipedian userpage. I'll give you time to switch your userpage boxes to:

{{Userbox| border-c = #DAA520 | info-c = #FFFF00 | id-c = #FFD700 | id-s = 14 | id-fc = #FFFFFF | id = [[Image:Terry.jpg|45px]] | info-s = 8 | info-fc = black | info = This user is on the '''[[Infosphere:Welcoming Committee|welcoming committee]]'''.}}
{{Userbox| border-c = #00008B | info-c = #F5F5F5 | id-c = #0000CD | id-s = 14 | id-fc = #FFFFFF | id = WP | info-s = 8 | info-fc = black | info = This user is also on '''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:YourUserName Wikipedia]'''}}

before I delete the unneeded box templates. - Quolnok 15:44, 3 December 2006

subst[edit]

When welcoming you should have been using {{subst:welcome|~~~|~~~~~}} rather than {{welcome|~~~|~~~~~}} because the second one leads to new users accidentally deleting the template's content, as Bendog just did. - Quolnok 18:17, 9 December 2006 (PST)
